Abstract
-
This paper extends current analysis regarding potential non-linearities in the relationship between the strength of a country’s intellectual property rights (IPRs) and their level of innovation by introducing patent quality as an additional measurement of innovative output. The fixed effect regression models assess the effect of IPR strength on the number of granted patents per capita and the quality of those granted patents for 78 countries in the years 1985-2015. The results do not identify a threshold of IPR strength, and instead find a generally linear relationship between IPR strength and the number and quality of innovative outputs. Additionally, the results show that countries with low rates of GDP growth have a more positive response to increases in IPR than high growth rate countries.
